Brothers Bob and Buster are 14 years old Whippets who recently came in together to have their professional dental cleaning carried out. During the procedure, which required a general anaesthetic, their teeth and gums were examined closely for any problems and then scaled and polished. They were both star patients and now have a clean bill of dental health! However, if dental problems are noted, tooth extractions can become necessary to ensure that your pet is pain free because no one likes a toothache!
The most important thing to do is address dental disease as soon as it is detected, no matter how minor. Better yet, you can also work towards prevention.
There are several things you can do to help keep your pet’s teeth in good shape. Start a dental care routine as early as possible in your pet’s life so they get used to the feeling of having their teeth brushed and inspected. You can also purchase special dental treats like ‘Greenies’ or incorporate special diets into their meals like ‘Hills T/D’. Dental toys are also great fun for pets!
