Chic is a 15 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross who needed a splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen). Chic first came to the clinic inappetant (not interested in food), quieter than usual and tender in the abdomen. Radiographs showed a large mass in the abdomen, so the veterinarian advised an ultrasound at the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre to gather more information. The ultrasound confirmed the mass in the abdomen was the diseased spleen and Chic was booked in for surgery to have this removed. During the splenectomy, Chic required a blood transfusion and Steve, a six year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier (one of the nurse's dogs) was the perfect candidate. Due to Steve's generous donation of 240ml of blood, Chic is now doing really well one month on and will always be thankful for Steve's generous donation.
