Billy's thyroid under control

Billy is a 13 and a half year old bright eyed domestic short haired cat who is such a gentleman here at Fitzroy Veterinary Clinic. We have been seeing Billy and his lovely owner since 1999. Billy is one of our senior feline friends and we have enjoyed watching him grow up into the sweet old man he is today.

Billy came in recently with his owner to have his senior health check and to have a small blood sample taken. The blood sample was sent to the pathologist to reveal information about Billy's organs and to provide the veterinarian with an overall picture of Billy’s health.

Billy has hyperthyroidism and we monitor this condition that he has closely.  This is a condition that can affect some middle aged to elderly cats and Billy is on medication to control it.

Hyperthyroidism is caused by an increase in the production and secretion of the thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland in the neck. Signs can be a healthy appetite but losing weight and changes in behaviour. Because hyperthyroidism can predispose a cat to other conditions, it is important that he is monitored here and by his owner at home. It requires a real team effort!
